WHAT IS THIS? WHO NEEDS THIS AND WHAT FOR?…

You are probably asking yourself - what is this map about? who needs this and what is it for?

Well, the short answer is: we want to seize the unseizable, as far as possible... Meaning to embrace everyone. And here we are talking about people  with Down Syndrome - children and adults - who need our support, who need the support of those near them.

Who we are? - We have teamed as the Public Association SUNSHINE and our goal is to increase the level of awareness and understanding of Down Syndrome (DS) in the Republic of Moldova, to promote the rights of people with DS, so that they enjoy a plenary life, with dignity, and to serve as active participants, rightly appreciated in the communities where they live.

We are now coming up with this unique project for Moldova - an online map of people with DS - having the following goals:

• to get to know each other;
• to attract more funds and assistance, including individually at the family level;
• to better assess what achievements we have (all together or each family separately) and then make it possible to attract specialists who would deal individually with these children, since we've got many talented ones, referring to, for example, dancing, painting, etc.

The logic of gathering consolidated data about families with people having Down Syndrome was at first to identify them, and then to get in touch with them and to keep their records. This way, when we have offers of help from kind and merciful people, we should be ready with all the needed data - how many people are in a specific region, their contact details, so that they could be reached. We try to be optimistic, to think positively and we do count on the support from the society!

As for the map itself, everything is simple: just click on the districts of the Republic of Moldova, or, if it is Chisinau, then on any area here, and you will finally see a list of real people (children and adults) in that region. You can also access the list of all the people with DS that we have, for the entire country. Unfortunately, our list is far from being complete, but we will strive to expand it as much as possible.

When you see the list of people, you will notice that we do NOT publish detailed data (i.e. no family name, no exact address and no phone numbers, although we do have them). However, each person can be contacted directly, as they all have a personalized email address, so that anyone can send a message to that family. For instance, if someone wants to help a family in a particular region, they will be able to write a personal message to them. All email addresses are active, messages come to the administrator, and then we send them to the respective families. And for those who have their own email addresses, we can arrange that the messages from our website emails would be redirected to the recipients' own emails.

Attention! If you have information about other people with Down Syndrome who are not currently on our list, please kindly share it with us, so that we can connect with those people. All we need is just the name and some contact info (phone number or e-mail address). |

Important: we publish the pictures and descriptions only with the consent of each family. The information published on this website does not contain personal data, and all the data collected by our Association are for internal use only.

At the time of the launch of our online map (May 5, 2020), there were 145 families in our database, and at the end of December 2022 we've got 243 families. However, in fact the actual number is many times higher! For example, our data shows that we have 133 people with DS in Chișinău municipality, but according to various estimates, their number ranges from 300 to 500, and there are more than a thousand in the entire country... But, unfortunately, the official statistics is silent on this subject, that's why we decided to come with a call to the society - let's try to gather information about them all!

From the beginning, the idea of this project was to raise public awareness that we have such people among us and that they need support.
